Govt. College for Women,
M.A. Road, Srinagar.
A tribute to Miss. Mehmooda Ahmed Ali Shah
The Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar, a pioneer in women education in the state was established in 1950. At that time the Kashmir society was economically and educationally backward. One can well imagine the plight of women folk in that dark hour of history. The only weapon to wage a war against oppression and ignorance & the only hope to restore the lost dignity of mankind in general and women in particular was education
Miss. Mehmooda Ahmed Ali Shah was one of the few women of her times to have persued higher education. She did graduation from Kinnaird College, Lahore, and Post-Graduation from Govt. College Lahore and also B.T. from Punjab University. After returning to valley she was stunned to note the world of difference in the opportunities available to women in and outside the state.
She observed that women had a desire, willingness and aptitude to learn and better their lot but they were denied entry into the realm of education. Miss. Mehmooda Ahmed Ali Shah was fortunate enough to have parents who treated all their children alike. She felt strongly the need to develop a kind of awareness among the people to realize the importance of imparting education to both boys and girls alike. Women’s college, M.A. Road, Srinagar provided an opportunity for Miss. Mehmooda as its Principal (1954—1974) to become part of the changing scenario. Her thinking was also influenced by friends that included tall personalities like Mrs. Indira Gandhi former Prime Minister of India, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad the then education minister Mrs. Aruna Asif Ali, the luminary poets Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Kaifi Azmi, Sajjad Zaheer besides Mr. Saiffud-din Kichloo, Mr. Krishan Chandra and Mr. Mian Iftikhar-ud-din. The association of these comrades provided an impetus to Miss. Mehmooda to break the shackles of feudal restraints. Providing equal opportunities of higher education to women of the state become a passion for her. She had a vision to see Jammu & Kashmir women as professors, doctors, engineers, lawyers, social and political workers. Although, higher and technical education was being imparted to women all-over India, J&K probably was the only state with no such avenues. The setting up of Govt. College for Women with just 15 students on rolls of learning for the daughters of the soil was a dream come true. The institution today has blossomed into a seat of higher learning with over 22 departments and more than 7000 students.
Miss. Mehmooda Ahmed Ali Shah illuminated the torch of higher education for women with zeal and infinite honesty. The college has become the harbinger of change for the advancement in the field of female education and today the college does not only cater to the educational needs of the undergraduates but also to the post-graduate students of the valley. The college in a great measure owes its success to Prof. Mehmooda Ahmed Ali Shah
The people of the state in general and academic fraternity in particular shall always remember her contribution in furthering the cause of women education in the state.

Call For Papers
Govt. College for Women, M. A. Road is organizing a 2-day National Conference on, Politics of Pedagogy: Theory and
Practice of Teaching English in India, on the 9th - 10th of April 2012.The thematic concerns that the conference proposes to
The English language had made inroads into the Indian subcontinent even before the advent of colonization. During
colonial rule it placed itself firmly in India, thereby emerging as one of the important languages of the country. Since
independence, the teaching of English language and literature has continued successfully but not without raising fundamental
questions about the curriculum, methods and materials used. The teaching of English has on the one hand empowered some
segments of Indian population by opening doors to the job market and giving birth to varieties of English like Dalit English,
but on the other hand it has marginalized the non- English speaking population of the country. Equally debatable is the
structure and content of the English curriculum which is in operation in different educational institutions of the country.
The theories advocated for the teaching of languages in general and of English in particular are of Western origin, usually
based on Western traditions and sensibilities. Same can be said about the teaching methods and evaluation procedures which
are in vogue in the country. The teaching materials often reflect the gender and cultural bias which needs to be taken up for
serious study . The conference aims to discuss such and many other issues related to the teaching of English language and
literature in India.
Original and analytical papers are invited from scholars pertaining to the following themes:
- • Curriculum for the teaching of English language and literature in India
- • Student’s communicative needs and teacher’s perception
- • Role of publishing industry in ELT in India
- • Do western ELT models fit our teaching context?
- • The otherness of non-English speaking youth in India
- • Gender/cultural bias in ELT materials
- • Viability of ESP courses in India
- • Teaching language through literature
- • Relevance and importance of English language in 21st Indian society.
- • Use of technology in teaching English.
